Add the pasta of your choice (e.g., spaghetti, fusilli, or penne) to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.
While the pasta is cooking, prepare the pesto sauce. In a food processor, combine fresh basil leaves, garlic, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, and a pinch of salt.
With the food processor running, slowly drizzle in olive oil until the mixture is smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Once the pasta is cooked, reserve a cup of pasta water and then drain the pasta.
Return the drained pasta to the pot over low heat, add the pesto sauce, and mix well. If the sauce is too thick, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until reaching the desired consistency.
Serve immediately, garnished with additional Parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of pine nuts if desired.
